The area of Maronia is the land of the ancient Thracian tribe of Kikones.

Here was the first stop of King Odysseus’s long trip back to his homeland Ithaca.

King Maron gave him as a present 12 amphorae of the famous local wine. With this wine, Ulysses saved himself and his comrades from the Cyclops Polyphemus, who hold them as hostages. They got him drunk and blinded him, so they could escape.

The area of Maronia was the biggest and greater ancient Greek colony in the area of Western Thrace.

The safe harbor of Maronia allowed the city to be a great trading center. Its fertile fields and the rich mineral resources of the area, brought the city to a state of continuous prosperity from the Ancient years up to the Roman Times.
